ORPHANS

“The number of children who have lost one or both parents is expected to rise to 35 million by 2010. The risk of orphanhood is thus no longer a random shock affecting a few families, but rather a systemic shock affecting whole communities and segments of the population. In addition, poverty and conflict also increase children’s vulnerability to becoming child soldiers, street children and child labourers.”

(The World Bank, 2008)

The plight of the orphan in the modern world cannot be stressed enough. It is a shame that despite our technological advancement over past century we have failed miserably intellectually, and millions of orphans living with us today are a testimony to this fact.

Most of them just serve as statistics and many more do not even show up on those tables. Being very weak both physically and mentally these children are susceptible to more harm than one can imagine, ranging from being recruited as child soldiers to sex slaves to underpaid and overworked laborers.

“Even more often, malnutrition cripples children’s growth, renders them susceptible to disease, dulls their intellects, and diminishes their motivation and their productivity.”

For most of the orphans, globally, education is something that they dream about and yearn for. They too, like all other children if given the opportunity will shine by the grace of God.

“It is estimated that over 250,000 children are currently serving as child soldiers in armed conflicts worldwide.”

- UNICEF, 2009

The numbers are overwhelming and the time to take action and help these children is now. It is through you generosity and programs such as this that we can help these vulnerable children lead a better life and hope for a brighter future. After all, don’t they also have a right to education, food, shelter and security just like every one of us?

“87.6 million Orphans live in Asia. 43.4 million Orphans live in Sub-Saharan Africa. 12.4 million Orphans live in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
